Honored With Industry Award for Exceptional Quality

JOURDANTON, TX. (August 11, 2009)— Two comprehensive studies of hospital performance have shown that South Texas Regional Medical Center (STRMC) ranks among the top hospitals in the state in quality and efficiency outcomes by the TMF Health Quality Institute, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Texas.

STRMC was first lauded with the recognition as a top performer for the TMF’s Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) in June. Most recently, STRMC was listed as a qualifying recipient for the Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Award of Excellence.

South Texas Regional Medical Center was among just 27 hospitals in the State of Texas, who will receive the prestigious Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Award of Excellence later this month in a ceremony in Austin. More than 227 hospitals across the state were considered for the honor.

Both recognitions are derived from the hospital’s standardized quality measures reported to the government. Current Hospital Compare Data, which is a comprehensive report of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey or HCAHPS by the US Department of Health & Human Services, ranked STRMC’s performance above numerous San Antonio area hospitals. Those facilities included: Southwest General, Methodist Hospital System, Baptist Medical Center and Christus Santa Rosa.

STRMC’s supports the State of Texas and the federal government’s position to increase publicly reported quality data. Danielle M. Flores, STRMC Director of Marketing says, “Our hospital supports sharing this information as part of our continuing effort to be even more transparent to our community about the quality of care we provide.”

“We are pleased to be honored among the state’s elite healthcare facilities and recognized for our quality and service,” said Flores. “This distinction is reflective of the efforts of our 350 employees, dedicated physicians and healthcare staff at South Texas Regional Medical Center who are committed to providing personal, compassionate care to our patients.”

Jim Resendez, Interim CEO explains, “South Texas Regional Medical Center has strict internal standards for quality and patient care, and we regularly monitor our performance and progress in meeting – and exceeding – those benchmarks.” Resendez adds, “The personal fulfillment of serving our patients’ needs is the ultimate reward for healthcare professionals. However, external recognition of our hospital’s performance by an independent authority in our industry is very gratifying, and speaks to our commitment to quality.”
