January Healthy Woman Seminar success

January’s Healthy Woman Seminar marks a successful start for the program. Fifty members attended the health seminar last Thursday night which featured guest speaker, Dr. Thomas Vuong of Pleasanton Family Medicine.

Dr. Vuong delivered an informative presentation about diabetes.  Members learned how to differentiate between Type I and Type II diabetes, which require distinct treatment plans and medications. Popular medications were discussed as well as their documented benefits and side effects for men and women.

The presentation helped arm members to make informed decisions regarding the disease. Dr. Vuong discussed available screening methods and explained the increased probability of receiving inaccurate results when using some forms of testing. Many members were unaware that there are contributing factors that may skew results more easily using one testing method over that of another.

According to Dr. Vuong, among the available testing methods, laboratory testing using blood samples produce the most accurate results when detecting diabetes. However, controlled testing methods must be applied regarding the examinees food intake. Additionally, the test should be administered three times to be able to effectively determine the presence of the disease.

South Texas Regional Medical Center wishes to thank Dr. Thomas Vuong for volunteering his time to the STR Healthy Woman Program and its members. We wish him continued success with his new practice, Pleasanton Family Medicine.
