Jourdanton, TX– Years ago, many people may have looked forward a period of their life post-work era and thought of it as a time to relax a little, travel or enjoy personal hobbies. However, more people are now finding themselves again raising children – your grandchildren! If this cycle is familiar to you, then you're not alone. The U.S. Census reported in 2000 that more than 4 million children under 18 live in grandparent-headed households.
Grandparents take on the parenting role for many reasons, such as when their grandchildren are neglected or their own child dies. Although it's an honorable commitment that can be wonderfully fulfilling, you're not doubt facing an increased financial burden and new demands on your time and energy.
You don't have to go it alone. Ask your healthcare provider, clergy, school and local social service agencies to direct you to services and programs for second-time parents. Also considering joining a support group where you can share your experiences and get advice.
Make your own health a priority, too. Eat well, exercise and reduce stress. By taking care of yourself, you'll be better equipped to take care of your precious grandchildren.
This month's Senior Circle Lunch-n-Learn event is scheduled for Thursday, September 11th and will focus on this issue. M. Alejandra Moreno, M.D., specializing in pediatrics is the keynote speaker for the luncheon. Members are encouraged to attend. If you are not a member of Senior Circle, but would like to join, please call Jacque Stacy at 830-569-8000.
