Growing our community—one baby at a time

Local teacher chooses STRMC as the birthplace of her family

Jourdanton, TX—Deciding to start a family was a very exciting and momentous occasion for Pleasanton Primary school teacher, Judy Ortiz and her husband.

Being a teacher by profession, it was only natural that once the decision was made to try for their first child, Judy Ortiz was interested in obtaining the most information from her healthcare provider to plan for a safe and healthy start.

Ortiz recalls, “My established OB/GYN physician was located in San Antonio. I telephoned his office to schedule an initial appointment for prenatal advice and care before my husband and I tried to conceive.” However, much to her dismay, Ortiz quickly learned that her longtime physician could only make room in his schedule for a consultation six months in the future.

Local physician receives high marks from Pleasanton teachers

“A minimum of a half year wait just to receive an initial consultation to plan our pregnancy was too long of a wait for our preference,” continues Ortiz. “After talking about my dilemma with several other coworkers, they recommended that I call Dr. Edward Blackmon’s practice, Advanced OB/GYN Care of South Texas, located in Jourdanton within the hospital.”

Ortiz moved on her trusted colleagues’ advice and promptly telephoned Dr. Blackmon’s office. “I was pleasantly surprised when Dr. Blackmon scheduled me for an appointment within one week of my telephone call.”

After meeting Dr. Blackmon, Ortiz says, “I felt ease and confidence regarding his knowledge and experience. I asked a lot of questions during my visits. Dr. Blackmon always responded to my inquiries with very thorough and easy to understand explanations. I never left feeling confused.”

Experience leads to happy news

Just one month after Judy Ortiz’s initial appointment with Dr. Blackmon she received thrilling news—they were pregnant! Thanks to Dr. Blackmon’s close proximity and thoughtful staff who offered flexible scheduling, Judy Ortiz never missed a day of work.

“Whenever I felt ill, I was seen immediately. I felt very special and important, as if I were his only patient. When in reality the three other teachers that also delivered with Dr. Blackmon felt that they too received personalized care.”

Local success

Judy Ortiz describes the care she received at South Texas Regional Medical Center’s (STRMC) Maternal Newborn Department “one-to-one care”.  The Ortiz’s welcomed a healthy baby boy as the first addition to their growing family. Both she and her husband would highly recommend delivering at STRMC to anyone who wants the convenience of local, personalized care.

“My husband and I agree that we should support our local physicians whenever possible so that our medical community can continue to thrive. If we don’t use the resources that we have locally, then one soon there may not be specialized care options available,” says Ortiz.
